Network Overview
Understanding the EDC's pre-wired network architecture and connectivity options.
⏱️ Read Time: 3 minutes
Overview
The EDC includes a network infrastructure with all internal components connected via a managed switch. The network is designed for immediate deployment with minimal configuration required.
Core Network Components:
- EnGenius Networks ECS2510FP managed PoE+ switch (8-port, 2.5Gb)
- EnGenius Networks ECP106 or ECP106-INT managed PDU (network-monitored power)
- IoT monitoring device (PoE-powered)
- Compute nodes (edition-dependent)
- Pre-wired keystone jack panel for external connections
Network Architecture
Internal Network
All components connect through the EnGenius switch, which provides:
- Data connectivity for compute nodes, PDU, and IoT devices
- Power over Ethernet (PoE+) for the IoT monitoring device and your Wireless Gateway/AP.
- Management access for monitoring and control
- Uplink ports for external network connections
Factory Configuration
The switch and PDU ship with factory default settings, and functions essentially as an unmanaged switch. Initial network access uses the default IP addresses and credentials provided by EnGenius.
Default configuration details:
- Refer to EnGenius documentation included with your EDC
- Switch manual: EnGenius ECS Series User Guide
- PDU quick start: EnGenius ECP106 Quick Start (NA) or ECP106-INT (International)
Port Assignments by Edition
The EDC comes pre-wired with all internal connections completed. Port assignments vary by edition.
For detailed wiring diagrams and complete port mappings, refer to:
This appendix includes:
- Complete port-to-device mapping for each edition
- Power distribution diagrams
- Cable labeling reference
- Available ports for expansion
Quick Reference
📦 NUC Edition:
- Ports 1-6: Compute nodes (2 RJ45 ports per NUC, labeled cables)
- Port 7: IoT device (PoE powered)
- Ports 8-9 (SFP+): Available for uplink, gateway, or other devices
- Port 10 (SFP+): PDU network connection
🔶 HR01-2 Edition:
- Ports 1-4: Compute nodes (2× 2.5G RJ45 per HR-01 node)
- Port 5: IoT device (PoE powered)
- Port 6: PDU network connection
- Ports 7-10: Available for uplink, gateway, or other devices
- Note: Direct DAC interconnect between HR-01 nodes (not through switch)
Uplink Options
Wired Uplink (Standard)
Copper Connection:
- Connect site network to switch port 9 or 10 (SFP+ with copper transceiver)
- Supports auto-negotiation: 100M/1G/2.5G/5G/10G
- Standard RJ45 Ethernet cable
Note: SFP+ ports 9-10 come with copper transceivers pre-installed for RJ45 connectivity
Optional Uplink Methods
Cellular Gateway:
- 5G/LTE cellular connectivity option
- Connects to available switch ports
- See Gateway Configuration
Satellite (Starlink):
- Compatible with Starlink terminals
- Connects to available switch port
- Provides connectivity in remote locations
Network Access Points
Keystone Jack Panel
The EDC includes a keystone jack panel for connection of the EDC items to the switch due to the internal wiring for neat cable organization.
Management Access
Direct Connection Method (Local Management):
- Connect laptop to available keystone jack
- Access switch, PDU, and compute nodes via their management interfaces
- Default IP addresses and credentials in EnGenius documentation unless changed
Cloud Management (Optional):
- Add switch and PDU to EnGenius Cloud for remote management
- Centralized dashboard for monitoring and control from anywhere
- Automatic firmware updates and simplified configuration
- Free for basic features; advanced features may require subscription
- See EnGenius Cloud documentation for device onboarding
Advanced Configuration
For network customization beyond basic uplink connectivity:
- Switch configuration: Refer to EnGenius ECS Series User Manual
- PDU configuration: Refer to EnGenius PDU Quick Start Guide
- VLANs, QoS, and advanced features: See Advanced Networking
Note: The EDC is pre-wired for immediate operation. Advanced network configuration is optional and should only be performed by qualified network administrators.
